FDP Programme on French Language

One day Faculty Development Programme was organized by Amity School of Languages for all AUH faculties on 26th Oct 2017. The FDP was conducted by Dr. Sushant Kumar Mishra, Associate Professor in Centre of French & Francophone, JNU, New Delhi. He took 2 Sessions based on some specific themes. In his first session, he traced the history of translation in which he cited examples from texts of Ayurveda, judiciary and other domains. He further talked about inter-disciplinarity of this domain and importance of cultural narratives while translating the ideas. While pointing out the differences between translation and anuvad, Dr Mishra highlighted how ideas can get morphed and can give a completely different meaning. In that way, the travelling of ideas from one time and space to another was discussed at large.

During the second session, Dr. Mishra talked about different processes of translation (from French to English and vice-versa). He also talked about the techniques of translation. The seven processes used during the translation process: Calque, adaptation, emprunt, modulation, transposition, traduction literale and traduction. The concept of direct and indirect translation was also put forward and the difficulties faced by translator were pointed out by Dr Mishra. Overall Session was quite informative, during the same time small group activities were also performed.
